Aerial Surveying Services
Aerial Surveying Services are becoming more readily available with the use of “drones”. In the past, aerial photography was an expensive exercise that required the use of a plane flying over the site to capture images. This tended to restrict aerial surveying services to larger companies in the pastoral and mining industries. Now with the more affordable option of drones to capture these images and with continually improving technology, these services are available to a wider range of industries –planners and developers, real estate agents, local government agencies and civil engineers.
Mepstead & Associates’ state of the art aerial surveying equipment (drone) is able to capture detailed data in a shorter time frame than standard ground based land surveys.
We have trained, licensed Remote Pilot Aircraft System (drone) operators who are skilled in the use of our own high tech equipment. While most of the work that we undertake is still ground based land surveying, we are now able to offer you an alternative method which is particularly suited to development of larger areas of land.

Our Drone Technology
Our Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) has a very high resolution DSLR camera and GPS on board and is designed for remote sensing applications as well as aerial photogrammetry and videography.
The overall advantages of our particular system include:
- Vertical take-off and landing allow usage of the RPAS in confined spaces and dense urban areas. If your development area is surrounded by existing buildings, you are still able to take advantage of this system.
- Our RPAS has very stable flying capabilities with 8 motors ensuring site safety. This allows it to be legally used in densely populated areas and on worksites.
- We are able to take video footage as well as high resolution images for historical purposes – a perfect “snapshot in time” that can be used in case of disputes (Disputes over stockpile changes are an ever increasing issue for land developers).
- We have panoramic and 360° (globe) programs which are great for marketing materials. We can show potential views from varying building levels for the sale of proposed multi-level developments.
- Because our drone has superb safety features and design, we have CASA approvals that will allow us to operate in areas near people and equipment throughout the Sydney basin, including within 3 kilometres of controlled airport zones and restricted areas
We are able to provide volume surveys for stockpiles, earthworks or any other measurable item. We are able to provide quantities for civil projects, subdivisions, stockpiles and waste facilities. Whether the site requires regular visits or a one off survey, any size site or volume can benefit from the immediate increase in efficiency, accuracy and safety.
Aerial surveying is advantageous for:
- Dangerous and inaccessible locations
- Large and relatively clear sites
- Rough terrain sites
- Preplanning
Surveying Volumes, Stockpiles and Earthworks using Aerial Surveying is faster, as accurate (generally more) and safer than traditional survey or laser scanning methods.
We are qualified land surveyors and engineers, not just drone pilots so we understand what we are required to deliver and ensure it is correct.
Mepsead & Associates are fully licensed and fully insured Remote Pilot Aircraft System (drone) operators.
Aerial Surveying Services:
- Scheduled Stockpile reports/Quantities (Signed in-house by Registered Surveyor)
- Earthworks – volumes and cuts
- Works as Executed on pads or grades – before, during and prior to handover
- Progress Reports and Client updates
- Greenfield sites, feasibility studies/tendering
- Road work corridors – benching, trimmed surfaces, batters, any surface
- Mapping of steep inaccessible inclines
- Storm damage assessment & control
Aerial Surveying Deliverables can include:
- Digital Terrain Models (multiple formats)
- Contours and features (dwg or dxf)
- Geo-referenced models
- Dense Point Clouds
- High resolution ortho photos (Mosaics)
- Inspection imagery or video (including fly-thru’s)
- Google Earth files (great for client interaction/updates)
- Point Clouds (coloured) – LAS, LAZ plus more
- Feature lines – 2D/3D feature extraction from Aerial Surveys (many CAD formats)
- Orthomosaics – rectified and high resolution images (horizontal and elevation)
- Volumes – reports and models
- Additional Aerial Services:Data can be supplied as a final delivered result or accessed over a cloud based interactive project viewer (Propeller-Aero). Most data for volumes, stockpiles and earthworks is available within 24hrs of the survey being undertaken. Simple volumes can be obtained within a few hours onsite if required.Vertical accuracies of greater than 5mm can be achieved using our RPAS equipment and a high overlap if required.
